Afterimage @ Depaul University

My animation "Minnie Moohlah Moves In" is currently viewable from the Fullerton Redline platform as part of the Afterimage exhibition at Depaul University here in Chicago. Above are a few stills of the animation but it is best viewed at the show which is chock full of amazing artists who have all been influenced by the Chicago Imagists. Go see it before it closes on November 18th!

Modern Inkers and Rarely Seen at the AIC

I recently Curated a show called Modern Inkers: Experimentation in Comics in the Ryerson Library of Art Institute of Chicago. It's up until September 23rd.

I also helped Curate a selection of printed works for the current show in Prints and Drawings entitled Rarely Seen Contemporary Works on Paper which is on view until January 13th.

Happenings at CAKE this weekend

This weekend marks the first annual Chicago Alternative Comics Expo, or CAKE. I most excited to be moderating a panel between the legendary Karl Wirsum of Hairy Who fame, and local artist/curator Paul Nudd.

I will have some new comics debuting at the fest in the CAKE anthology edited by Andy Burkholder and in Corpus Corpus 4: Pox which is edited by Paul Nudd and available at his booth. Will also have some prints for sale at the Trubble Club booth so stop by!

After the fest on Saturday head up the street to the Cake art show Eat Before We Eat You where a couple of my comic pieces and some poster drawings are on display. Info:

OHNO!DOOM GALLERY PRESENTS ‘THE COMPANY OF OTHERS’ COLLABORATIVE SHOW JUNE 9, 2012

OhNo!Doom Gallery gathers five local and visiting artists for The Company Of Others, a collaborative show featuring exciting interpretations of the figure study. Styles range from abstract to what could be described as psychedelic pop, but as OhNo!Doom Gallery co-owner Joey Potts says, “No matter how differently they work, they each give a nod to classical visions of art while still being very contemporary.”

or, The C.A.K.E. Show

Curated by Onsmith & Nudd




Although not strictly a comics show, The CAKE Show (subtitled "Eat Before We Eat You" - the toxic mantra of the legendary bottom-of-the-barrel weirdo schlock-fest Troll 2) will include one-offs and side projects by a multitude of local and national artists that work deep within the fleshy walls of the underground comics world or, at very least, in an underground comics vain. Traditional comics panels will be exhibited alongside a slew of visual out takes, false starts, b-sides and orphans: prints, paintings, drawings, sketches, sculptures, posters, zines, and other ephemera. Formally trained artists that operate inside the fine art and comics worlds will comprise the majority of the show, but work will also be included by several untrained self taught artists. The central themes of E.B.W.E.Y. are productivity, promiscuity, radioactivity, infidelity, and automatous artistic cannibalism. The result will be something of an artistic curiosity shop or odditorium, a peculiar curio cabinet of comics inspired graphic wonders and deformities. This show will coincide with the much anticipated first ever Chicago Alternative Comics Expo at Columbia College Chicago.

10 x 10 2012 Edition

I made a print for the new 10x10 series put together by spudnik press and homeroom. If you're not familiar here is the description of what the project is:

"For the 2012 edition of Ten x Ten, ten visual artists and ten recording artists were matched up and collaborated in pairs to produce a song/print on the theme "Lost and Found”. Though many of the contributing artists are, lets say of and inspired by the Hip Hop Generation, we are cautious to call this edition of Ten x Ten a “Hip Hop Project.” Its artistic, musical, and thematic merit runs the gamut. The final Ten x Ten package includes 10 screen-prints in a sleeve with CD of the original tracks."

I collaborated with local hip-hop star Philip Morris, an extremely talented lyricist, and fellow video game connoisseur. I think we did a pretty stand-up job!

Long time no update, all I can say is that my hands are full of big things right now, but here's a little bit of info on what exactly it is I've been doing.

1. Building the comics collection at the Art Institute of Chicago's Ryerson Library. I was interviewed about the collection by the Chicago Underground Library, which can be read here:

4. Everything else: New issue of Lumpen will be coming out shortly from what I hear, the comics section is one of my favorites so far. Planning an exciting funnybook related event for next summer/fall in Chicago, and of course hanging out with these folks. New issues of that have hit the presses from what I gather. Make sure you pick one up!
